“I hate Taylor Swift,” Donald Trump declared on Truth Social last fall, after Swift endorsed his opponent Kamala Harris. Trump later declared, earlier this year, that the pop star was “no longer hot.”

Now, with the news that Swift and NFL star Travis Kelce are engaged, Trump was, of course, asked about it on Tuesday, as part of Trump’s marathon cabinet meeting. The engagement had been announced during the cabinet meeting, with Fox News even cutting away from coverage of the meeting with the news.

“Well, I wish him a lot of luck,” Trump responded. “I think he’s a great player. I think he’s a great guy. And I think that she’s a terrific person. So I wish them a lot of luck.”

It was a much more magnanimous attitude than Trump has shown towards the couple in the past, although Trump may have been reacting to Travis Kelce declaring, before this past year’s Super Bowl, that it would be an “honor” to play in front of the president of the United States. Trump attended the Super Bowl in February in New Orleans, becoming the first-ever sitting president to do so, although he departed the stadium at halftime, and was not present to watch the Chiefs lose to the Philadelphia Eagles. Even before dating Swift, Kelce had been treated by some as liberal-coded, especially after appearing in advertisements for the Pfizer vaccine during the pandemic.

Among some in the MAGA sphere, conspiracy theories have spread that the Kelce/Swift relationship was some sort of sham, meant to hurt Trump or help the Democrats. The previous year, when the Chiefs also played in the Super Bowl, they won, and the couple kissed on the field afterward, there was an expectation among some MAGA types that the two would announce an endorsement of then-Democratic candidate Joe Biden. Other theories had it that the NFL season and Super Bowl itself were “rigged,” to ensure that outcome.

“All to spread DEMOCRAT PROPAGANDA. Calling it now: KC wins, goes to Super Bowl, Swift comes out at the halftime show and ‘endorses’ Joe Biden with Kelce at midfield. It’s all been an op since day one,” pro-Trump podcast host Mike Crispi predicted at the time.

But of course, nothing like that happened.
