Gavin Newsom and JD Vance may very well end up facing off against each other in the 2028 presidential election. But even with that vote more than three years away, one is already sniping at the other.
This week, the vice president gave an interview in which he was asked about the president’s health and whether he feels he’s ready to step into the presidency himself should it come to that.
“Yes, things can always happen,” Vance told USA Today. “Yes, terrible tragedies happen… And if, God forbid, there’s a terrible tragedy, I can’t think of better on-the-job training than what I’ve gotten over the last 200 days.”
That’s where Newsom came in, declaring “no thank you.”

Notably, that message came not from the “Governor Newsom Press Office” X account, but rather from the California governor’s personal account.
Per HuffPost, Vance had taken a shot at Newsom’s recent social media behavior in a recent Fox News interview.
“You can’t mimic the king,” Vance recently said on Fox News. “You can’t mimic the master.”
Also this week, Newsom warned about a scenario which would not involve Vance running as the Republican candidate in 2028.
Donald #Trump is serious about running for a third term in violation of the US constitution, California governor Gavin Newsom said, warning Americans to wake up to what he described as the president’s flagrant disregard for democratic norms.https://t.co/YJwIP7qSvP

“I don’t think Donald Trump wants another election,” Newsom said at a summit hosted by Politico, as reported by The Guardian. “You think he’s joking about 2028?”
“The rule of law is being replaced by the rule of Don.” Newsom also said that when he met with Trump at the White House in February, to ask for federal aid during the Los Angeles-area fires, Trump pointed to a portrait of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the only president to serve more than two terms, and then he “went on and on about the third term.”
Stephen, if you’re going to lie about who is stealing Congressional seats, at least stop yelling. It’s very shrill. https://t.co/faOI0VKG1p

Newsom also, this week, ripped White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller for being “shrill” while ripping Newsom in a recent Fox News appearance.
“Stephen, if you’re going to lie about who is stealing Congressional seats, at least stop yelling. It’s very shrill,” Newsom said on X.
