Officials later confirmed that the shooter was taken into custody by the FBI. Utah Governor Spencer Cox said a “person of interest” had been detained, though no charges were announced right away. The news quickly spread, leaving many across the country in shock.
Videos posted on social media captured the moment. Kirk sat under a white tent in the Sorensen Center courtyard with banners reading “The American Comeback” and “Prove Me Wrong.” He was holding a microphone and talking to the crowd when a single gunshot rang out. Blood poured from the side of his neck as students screamed, panicked, and ran in every direction.
The White House responded soon after. President Donald Trump announced Kirk’s death on Truth Social, writing: “The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie.” His message showed how close the two had been.
For many conservatives, Kirk’s death feels like the loss of one of their strongest voices. As the founder of Turning Point USA, he had built a movement that pushed conservative ideas on college campuses and inspired young supporters of Trump.
Details about the shooting are still coming out. Ellen Treanor, a spokeswoman for Utah Valley University, said the shot was fired from the Losee Center, about 200 yards away. Another spokesman, Scott Trotter, told the BBC that Kirk had just started his speech when the bullet struck.
What makes the scene even more haunting is that Kirk had been talking about gun violence just before the attack. A student had asked about the number of mass shootings in America over the past decade. Kirk answered, “Counting or not counting gang violence,” and then the shot rang out.
