Local WJBF broke the disturbing news this week that a South Carolina teacher’s aide has officially been charged with cruelty to children after it was discovered and reported that she allegedly duct-taped a 4-year-old student’s legs to a chair.
The Lexington County Sheriff’s Office ultimately responded to a report on the disturbing incident lodged by a parent at Seven Oaks Elementary School in Columbia, South Carolina.
The 4-year-old victim was reportedly placed in the back of the classroom for “flipping around and not listening to instruction.” At one point, the main teacher in the elementary school classroom had to leave the room for a few moments. According to reports, that’s when 25-year-old teacher’s aide Olivia Murray took it upon herself to use duct tape to tape the child’s legs to a chair and restrict their movement.
A police affidavit confirms, “The incident was corroborated by the 4K teacher and a confession from the defendant during a post-Miranda interview.”

The victim’s mother told police that she believes this incident is a result of retaliation by the teacher’s aide for a previous complaint made by the child’s parent about ongoing issues between her 4-year-old and Murray.
Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said in a statement, “Based on our investigation, Murray, who works as teacher’s aide, used duct tape to tape the student’s legs to a chair Wednesday while the teacher was out of the classroom. Murray told detectives the student had been moved to the back of the classroom for being disruptive and not listening.”
Murray has been arrested over the incident and is currently being held at the Lexington County Detention Center on charges of cruelty to children.
