According to new reporting from Punchbowl News the GOP has effectively broken down into little more than constant in-fighting, โtesty exchanges,โ and โshouting matchesโ as Republicans in the Senate continually fail to get their act together on crucial policies surrounding the passage of a border and foreign aid deal.
โPrivate Senate GOP meetings have devolved into testy exchanges over immigration, Donald Trump, and Ukraine, including Tuesdayโs closed policy lunch,โ Punchbowl reports. โIn particular, a handful of Senate Republicans revolted against Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), โquestioning whether the Kentucky Republican is using a tentative immigration and border security package as an end run with Democrats to help push through more money for Ukraine.โ
Punchbowl founder Jake Sherman further expanded on the flaring tensions among Senate GOP, reporting on X (formerly known as Twitter): โTheir meetings are devolving into shouting matches. Thereโs sniping at the leadership, accusation hurling, motivation questioning.โ

Senate Minority Leader and Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell seems to be the epicenter of the Republican in-fighting, as reports indicate that he utilized Tuesdayโs lunch to defend and push the aid package to Ukraine, citing the years of talk among the GOP about the urgency and importance of nipping Russian aggression in the bud. However, his fellow Republicans just arenโt biting.
McConnellโs biggest opponent and critic is Sen. Ron Johnson, who counterclaims that the GOP hasnโt โreally talked aboutโ support for Ukraine and further accused the Republican Minority Leader of an inability to โnegotiate his way out of a paper bag.โ
Another private meeting amongst Senate Republicans is slated for today, to further discuss the matter.
The tension among the Senate GOP is made worse by the fact that Republicans in the Senate are also at odds with Republicans in the House, who are firmly against any foreign defense aid packages that donโt come complete with strict, Draconian restrictions on asylum and legal immigration โ meaning the Republican party as a whole is in a state of disarray.
