The White House press fight just pulled unlikely allies into the same corner.
In an email obtained by Politico, Fox News Washington Bureau Chief Bryan Boughton told TV pool subscribers the arrangement was done, at least for now, tying the decision directly to the White House blocking CNN from its assigned pool duties. “This is to advise that, effective today, the TV pool will not be covering events designated as pool coverage of the President,” he wrote. “There will be no replacement pool put in place.”
ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News, and NBC announced Monday that the White House television press pool will stop covering President Donald Trump’s events after the administration barred CNN from its scheduled pool duties.

That email wasn’t meant for public eyes. It came marked “off the record” and “for planning purposes only,” and Politico noted it hadn’t been sent to the outlet in any official capacity, meaning someone’s careful planning got scooped anyway.

The scheduling made things awkward fast. CNN happened to be running pool duties that same Monday. A separate “daily guidance” email sent to reporters the night before had already quietly erased the pool from the schedule entirely, no mention of the usual five-network rotation anywhere in it.
Filling that gap, at least on paper, were Hearst, which operates local stations across the country, and the pro-Trump outlet Real America’s Voice, tapped for Trump’s trip to New York.
The stakes climbed even higher, too. Trump’s schedule this week includes the UN General Assembly, an event with limited camera access built specifically for pool-style coverage. A walkout during exactly that stretch could genuinely choke off how much footage of the president actually reaches the public.
The five traditional pool members had more to say than that, too. ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC, and Fox put their names on a joint statement Monday morning. “The public has a vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government,” it read. “No administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting.”

Fox News signing that particular sentence carries its own weight. This isn’t a network known for picking fights with this White House.
On Friday, Trump had announced that CNN, MS NOW, and Politico were banned “effective immediately,” writing that outlets “shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States.” He also floated adding The New York Times and The Washington Post to the list eventually.
