After another deadly federal operation in Minneapolis, outrage swept across the nation.
37-year-old Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a U.S. citizen and ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System, was shot and killed by a U.S. Border Patrol officer during an immigration sweep. Pretti spent his life caring for veterans. Family and colleagues called him compassionate and community-minded. They say he was deeply concerned about aggressive federal operations in the city.
Bystander video shows Pretti filming agents and helping a woman who had fallen. Federal officials said he approached officers armed with a 9mm handgun. But footage shows no visible threat. Many say the response was extreme.
White House advisor Stephen Miller labeled Pretti a “domestic terrorist.” President Trump shared a photo of the gun on Truth Social. “This is the gunman’s gun, loaded (with two additional full magazines!), and ready to go – What is that all about?” he wrote.
Trump also questioned why local police were not present. He accused Mayor Jacob Frey and Governor Tim Walz of inciting unrest and defended the federal operation.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez fired back immediately. “Donald Trump [is] accusing a Veteran Affairs ICU nurse (Alex Pretti) as being a terrorist against the United States,” she said.
“A man who was treating service members, dedicating his life to serving Americans. Who in his final act on this earth was helping a woman pushed to the ground. And they are calling him a Domestic Terrorist, in order to defend their gross abuse of power… and precipitate greater conflict.”
AOC called on Senate Democrats to block ICE and DHS funding. She also urged activation of the National Guard. “Americans are being killed in the street by their government,” she posted. “Resist.”

Ilhan Omar described the killing as “an execution by immigration enforcement.” She tweeted: “I am absolutely heartbroken, horrified, and appalled that federal agents murdered another member of our community. It is beyond shameful these federal agents are targeting our residents instead of protecting them.”

Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen said Trump and his allies had “blood on their hands.” California Senator Adam Schiff warned the situation was “spiraling out of control.” Minnesota State Senator Omar Fateh called it a “flat out execution” and demanded accountability for “untrained, untamed agents.”
This is the third federal operation in Minneapolis in recent weeks that ended in death. Protests have erupted, and the National Guard is now deployed.
