At the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Kamala Harris secured endorsements from an unexpected group: conservative Republicans. Names like former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), ex-Trump Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham, and Mesa Mayor John Giles echoed through the convention hall, sending a clear message about the dangerous path they believe Donald Trump and his MAGA allies may take if Harris wins the presidency in November.
These Republicans arenāt your average defectorsāthey see Trump as a fundamental threat to democracy itself. Mayor Giles, in particular, painted a chilling picture of what could unfold if Harris secures victory.
He warned that Trumpās allies will āthrow everything at the wall and see what sticks,ā suggesting another possible attempt to sabotage the democratic process, much like January 6, 2021. His words weren’t just speculationāthey were a forecast of chaos, fueled by the relentless conspiracies Trumpās followers have been spreading.
And the groundwork is already being laid. According to The Guardianās Peter Stone, groups like Turning Point USA and True the Vote, led by figures like Charlie Kirk, are busy creating a narrative of election fraud. Theyāre not waiting for Election Day; theyāre already stoking the flames, preparing to cry foul the moment things donāt go their way. Itās a playbook weāve seen beforeāundermine trust in the system, create confusion, and, if all else fails, ignite a firestorm of chaos.

Former Rep. Dave Trott (R-MI) has also joined the chorus of concern, highlighting Trumpās persistent fraud claims as his backup plan, a way to dismantle democracy should he lose. David Becker of the Center for Election Innovation and Research sounded even more dire. He argued that these baseless claims, masquerading as efforts to protect āelection integrity,ā are specifically designed to sow distrust, dismantle order, and possibly fuel violence.
This strategy is far from hypothetical. In an August episode of the New York Times’ The Daily podcast detailed how, in February, key Trump allies were appointed to the State Board of Elections in Georgia, setting the stage for potential election meddling.
The move raised concerns that if Harris wins, the board could call for an investigation, delaying certification and creating the perfect storm of uncertainty. Theyād claim itās all in the name of āelection integrity,ā but their real aim would be to drag the process into a mire of distrust, tipping the scales for Trump.
Trump, never shy about his intentions, has already started rallying his base. In Atlanta this August, he name-checked three of the Georgia election board membersāJanice Johnston, Rick Jeffares, and Janelle Kingāwho have become his front-line soldiers in this battle for power. “Theyāre fighting,” he declared to the crowd, “for honesty, transparency, and victory.” When Johnston stood in the crowd, she was met with roaring applause, a moment that underlined just how serious Trump is about throwing the entire electoral process into disarray.
In fact, Gov. Kemp is being called upon to remove those members for already creating issues for the upcoming election.
As the 2024 election draws nearer, Harris’s unlikely coalition of conservative supporters underscores whatās really at stake. This isnāt just a typical political raceāitās a fight to protect democracy from a movement willing to destroy it for the sake of power. The real question isnāt whether these Republicans have crossed party linesāitās whether democracy itself can survive the storm thatās coming.
