The entertainer Bad Bunny was announced last week as the performer at the next Super Bowl halftime show, sparking the usual culture war in reaction to the Spanish-speaking performer being chosen.
“What I’m feeling goes beyond myself,” Bad Bunny said in a statement when he was picked as the performer at the 60th Super Bowl. “It’s for those who came before me and ran countless yards so I could come in and score a touchdown… this is for my people, my culture, and our history. Ve y dile a tu abuela, que seremos el HALFTIME SHOW DEL SUPER BOWL.”
Many in the MAGA coalition have expressed outrage at Bad Bunny, who is Puerto Rican and an American citizen, being picked for the show. When they’re not upset that they’ve “never heard of” him, there has been anger that Bad Bunny has had critical things to say in the past about ICE. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has even declared that ICE will be “all over” the Super Bowl halftime show next February. Bad Bunny had recently staged a long residency in Puerto Rico, after stating that he worried ICE would come after his touring company if he played in the United States.
Days after the announcement, Bad Bunny hosted the season premiere of Saturday Night Live and addressed the controversy.

“It’s good to be back. This is my second time hosting and my fourth time being here,” Bad Bunny said in the opening monologue, per The Guardian. “I’m doing the Super Bowl halftime show. I’m very happy and I think everyone is happy about it.”

“More than being an accomplishment of mine, it’s an accomplishment for everybody, demonstrating that our mark and our contribution to this country will never be able to be removed or erased by anybody,” he said, according to The Guardian’s translation.
He also joked that audiences will have four months to learn Spanish, before his Super Bowl performance.
