Donald Trump often talks about elections being rigged, especially when he loses one, such as in 2020. This year, ahead of the midterm elections, Trump is talking about taking extraordinary steps, having already launched a raid on a polling place in Georgia.

Now, Trump is talking about requiring voter ID verification in the midterms, “whether approved by Congress or not,” although he almost certainly doesn’t have the power to do so.

“The Democrats refuse to vote for Voter I.D., or Citizenship. The reason is very simple — They want to continue to cheat in Elections. This was not what our Founders desired,” Trump said on Truth Social Friday afternoon.

“I have searched the depths of Legal Arguments not yet articulated or vetted on this subject, and will be presenting an irrefutable one in the very near future. There will be Voter I.D. for the Midterm Elections, whether approved by Congress or not! Also, the People of our Country are insisting on Citizenship, and No Mail-In Ballots, with exceptions for Military, Disability, Illness, or Travel. Thank you for your attention to this matter! PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP.”

It’s unclear what “irrefutable” legal argument Trump plans to deploy,

The House this week passed a bill known as the SAVE America Act, but according to 3 News, the bill is unlikely overcome Democratic opposition in the Senate. The same bill has already passed the House on two occasions.

“I just don’t see any way, shape or form that you’re going to get to 60 votes in the Senate,”  Mark Jones, a political science fellow at Rice University’s Baker Institute, told the TV station.

“There’s very little evidence across the country of noncitizens registering to vote and then casting votes,” Jones said. “Republicans have been looking under every rock, in every haystack, to try to find these individuals. And while a few pop up every so often, it’s extremely rare.”

Todd Belt, the Political Management program director at George Washington University, said in the same news story that the possibility for voter fraud under the current system is overstated.

“For the most part, it does,” he said. “And it’s almost nonexistent. So, it’s a pretend problem, and it’s a pretend problem that Donald Trump likes to run with because it furthers his narrative about the election in 2020 (being fraudulent). It also helps to keep people scared about immigrants.”
