Cabinet meetings are among the more bizarre spectacles of the Trump era, most notably marked by the ritual in which each cabinet member takes a turn praising the president.

The cabinet meeting on Wednesday was odd for a different reason, thanks to the president threatening to bomb a Middle Eastern ally of the United States.

The meeting took place at the nontraditional location of Camp David. At issue was a reporter’s question about a potential deal with Iran, in which Gulf nation of Oman would end up “jointly controlling” the Strait of Hormuz.

“The Strait will be open to everybody,” Trump said of the possible deal. “Nobody is going to control it…We will watch over it.”

“‘Oman will behave just like everybody else, or we’ll have to blow them up,” Trump said. “They understand that. They’ll be fine.”

Oman, as pointed out by the Daily Mail, has been a longtime ally of the United States, including in the Persian Gulf War.

“Oman has a history of serving as a friendly mediator between the White House and the Iranian regime. The country helped broker the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal and has acted as a US defense partner in the Middle East since 1980,” The Daily Mail said.

There were some shocked social media reactions to the president raising the prospect of acting to “blow up” a Mideast ally.
