Catholic Newspaper Slams JD Vance As A ‘Moral Stain’ After ICE Remarks

Shameless political hypocrisy

A leading Catholic newspaper has delivered a stunning rebuke of Vice President JD Vance after his remarks about the killing of Renee Nicole Good.

The National Catholic Reporter accused Vance of blaming the victim rather than the ICE officer who shot her dead in Minneapolis.

The outlet did not soften its language. It called Vance a “moral stain” on Christianity and said his version of faith is warped and dangerous.

The paper argued that Vance knows exactly what he is doing. “As a Catholic, Vance knows better than to peddle this brand of gaslighting and agitation,” the outlet wrote. “Vance knows that protesting, fleeing or even interfering in an ICE investigation does not carry a death sentence. Vance knows that lying and killing are sins. Vance knows. He doesn’t care.”

The editorial said his Catholicism has been rejected by two popes and reduced to “a political prop.”

Vance earned the backlash after comments he made following Good’s death. In one tweet, he wrote: “A tragedy? Absolutely. But a tragedy that falls on this woman and all of the radicals who teach people that immigration is the one type of law that rioters are allowed to interfere with.”

That framing enraged critics.

Good was not an activist or agitator. She was a 37-year-old poet and mother of three who was driving home after dropping her child off at school when she encountered ICE agents, and she had no criminal record. Her ex-husband said she was not politically involved.

Multiple videos from the scene show chaos, with agents shouting conflicting commands as Good tried to leave, and then an ICE officer fired multiple times at close range.

Local leaders who reviewed the footage rejected the federal account, and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called the official narrative “garbage.”

Vance doubled down anyway, and at a press conference he claimed Good’s death was of her “own making.” “You have a woman who aimed her car at a law enforcement officer and pressed on the accelerator. Nobody debates that,” he said, even though video evidence says otherwise.

“The gaslighting is off the charts and I’m having none of it,” he tweeted. “This guy was doing his job.”

Vance converted to Catholicism in 2019 after years as an atheist. Since then, he has used his faith as a political shield while pushing hardline immigration views.

Those views have put him at odds with church leadership.

Pope Francis sharply criticized mass deportations before his death and privately scolded Vance over migrant policy. His successor, Pope Leo XIV, has also kept his distance.
