As part of his campaign to send federal troops to U.S. cities, President Donald Trump announced last week that he would do so in “war-ravaged” Portland, Ore.

The announcement came in a Truth Social post on Saturday.

“At the request of Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, I am directing Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to provide all necessary Troops to protect War ravaged Portland, and any of our ICE Facilities under siege from attack by Antifa, and other domestic terrorists. I am also authorizing Full Force, if necessary,” the president said in the post.  “Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

Per Oregon Live, government officials in Portland were baffled by the announcement. The announcement, the report said, “was made without any prior communication to local or state officials, who learned of the plan from social media.”

Gov. Tina Kotek and Portland Mayor Keith Wilson said immediately that the city is “safe and calm,” and that they might challenge the order in court.

“While Trump cited ongoing sieges by ‘antifa,’ the article clarifies that recent protests outside the South Portland ICE facility have involved no more than several dozen people. A top Portland police official has previously stated in court that federal officers were ‘instigating and causing some of the ruckus’ during demonstrations,” Oregon Live reported. Portland was the site of frequent street clashes between far-right and far-left groups, but that was more the case several years ago than today.

The city of Portland’s government X account posted some pretty pictures of Portland, along with the notion that “we are hearing a lot about our hometown in the media. This is our Portland today: people visiting Saturday Market, feeding geese, sipping espresso, biking, playing in the park, and going to food carts.”

“he City of Portland has a long history of partnership with the federal government,” the Portland.gov website says. “That’s getting tougher, as the White House issues orders that clash with our values – and the law. Learn how Portland is standing up for our community while we work with our federal partners.”
