This hits home.

Over his lifetime — and I don’t just mean his time in the spotlight as America’s biggest embarrassment to date, I mean almost his entire 74 years on this earth — Donald J. Trump has been accused of a whole lot of heinous things. From the tax fraud, he’s currently under two investigations for, to the hush money payments when he was first running for the presidency, to the numerous, numerous women who have accused him of downright gutwrenching sexual assault and rape, to his association with know child sex traffickers such as the late Jeffery Epstein and the incarcerated Ghislaine Maxwell — the disgraced former president is certainly no stranger to gut-curdling accusations.

Despite denying any association with the known sex traffickers, multiple pictures of them all together have infiltrated social media. In spite of him labeling the investigations against him as “witch hunts,” the Manhattan District Attorney’s office compiled so much evidence against him that they actually convened a special grand jury. Michael Cohen has already spilled all the beans about the hush money payments, and court documents have shown the testimonies of his rape victims.

What I’m getting at here, is, when there’s an accusation against Donald Trump, it’s almost always true. And I have no doubt that this particular accusation is no exception to that rule. In fact, I know it’s not.

We all saw and heard how Donald Trump, who was still president at the time, reacted to the violent January 6th Capitol insurrection carried out by his most devout supporters. We all sat through his silence as they broke windows, smashed in doors, and invaded halls and offices. We listened to him tell him that he loved them all as they set fires and displayed nooses outside the building. We all watched as he publicly betrayed the country he took an oath to defend and protect. And that’s why this particular allegation hits home for us.

Speaking on MSNBC, Democratic Congresswoman for the Virgin Islands, Stacey Plaskett, openly accused ex-President Donald Trump of treason and attempting to overthrow the United States government.

“As you may recall, one of the things that the impeachment managers did discuss was this ideological war that we felt was not going to end. That was one of the reasons that we asked all of those 100 senators to vote to convict Donald Trump. That insurrection was, in fact, treason. It was, in fact, an attempt to overthrow our government. Because I believe many of those senators continued to perpetuate that lie, the war continues to go on. The civil war that is an ideological one between a democracy and an autocracy, “Rep. Plaskett said on MSNBC’s Velshi.

Her point is the same reason that Republicans continue to refuse a 1/6 Commission or any sort of an investigation into that fateful January day.

As we sit here now, Trump is preparing to take the stage in North Carolina, at the RNC, where he will almost assuredly harp on these same treasonous talking points that tore at the seams of our democracy just a few short months ago.
