Once a leading voice at GB News, Andrew Neil warned in a detailed post that Trump is turning America into a liability for its European allies. He pointed to the President’s threats to take Greenland from Denmark and the tariffs on several NATO countries as examples of how Trump’s actions are straining long-standing alliances.
Neil said: “Under Trump America is on the brink of becoming the enemy, not our most important ally. As a lifelong supporter of the US it is chilling to write and say such words.”
Neil’s alarm comes amid Trump’s obsession with Greenland. The President has threatened to take the massive Arctic island from Denmark, a NATO ally, even hinting at military action if negotiations fail. European leaders pushed back, warning such a move could destroy NATO. Trump ignored them and then slapped tariffs on eight European countries for opposing his plan.
“For all of my life, Russia has tried to decouple Europe from America and break the North Atlantic Alliance. It never succeeded,” Neil wrote. “But now success is staring the Kremlin in the face. All thanks to Donald Trump.”

Neil highlighted the danger of Trump’s behavior. Greenland is strategically important. Melting ice is opening new sea lanes, and the island sits almost directly between Russia’s northern missile bases and the US mainland. The United States already has a Space Force base there.
Previous Presidents, including Harry Truman in 1948, considered acquiring Greenland. Truman even made a $1.5 billion offer, which Denmark rejected. But Trump is the first President to threaten force if negotiations fail. “Nobody should underestimate the catastrophic consequences for NATO if its leading member annexed the territory of a smaller member,” Neil warned.
Trump claims Greenland faces threats from China and Russia, but Neil says that is nonsense. China hasn’t sent a ship there in 12 years. Europe and NATO allies are already increasing troop deployments to the Arctic, but Trump sees that as a threat to his personal ambition.
The tariffs Trump imposed on the UK and seven other allies show a pattern. “He always puts higher tariffs on America’s friends than its enemies,” Neil wrote. Europe now faces the grim task of preparing for a NATO without America if Trump keeps up his aggressive, reckless behavior.
Neil also criticized Trump for making Greenland part of a wider obsession with being a so-called “Imperial President.” Trump even told Norway’s prime minister he is more interested than ever because Norway denied him the Nobel Peace Prize. “There is no dealing with such nonsense,” Neil said.
Across Europe, officials are deeply concerned as Moscow watches quietly. Neil said this reveals a worrying new reality. America, long the backbone of NATO and Europe’s main ally, is now viewed as a source of uncertainty and risk.
