Two Minnesota lawmakers are in critical condition after they were shot in what officials believe were targeted attacks on Saturday. The violent incidents happened just miles apart, and police are now looking for the person responsible.

The victims are Senator John Hoffman and Representative Melissa Hortman. Both are Democrats and long-serving figures in Minnesota politics. Officials say they were attacked at their homes in two different cities just north of Minneapolis.

One shooting happened in Champlin. The other took place in Brooklyn Park, approximately eight miles away. The fact that both lawmakers were attacked around the same time has raised serious questions about whether they were targeted because of their political roles.

Authorities believe the shooter may have been pretending to be a law enforcement officer. That detail has added even more concern as the search for the suspect continues.

Right now, the manhunt is active and ongoing. The FBI has joined state and local officials to help track down the gunman. The Minnesota State Patrol and local police departments are also involved in the investigation.

Governor Tim Walz responded quickly after hearing the news. He traveled to the scene and spoke with officials. He also activated the State Emergency Operations Center to support the investigation.

No arrests have been made yet, and officials have not shared much about a possible motive. The public is being asked to remain vigilant and report any information that could help identify the suspect.

Both victims are well-known across Minnesota. Melissa Hortman is the former Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives. Senator John Hoffman has served in the legislature for several years. They are both respected for their service and leadership.

This news has shaken many in the state, including other lawmakers who are now being advised to increase their personal safety. Extra security has been added around the state Capitol and to some homes of public officials.

So far, officials have not said if these attacks were politically motivated, but the fear is growing. Two elected leaders were shot in their own homes on the same day. That is not something the public or lawmakers can ignore.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
