Details are beginning to surface about the man accused of trying to break into Vice President JD Vance’s home, and they paint a troubling picture.
The suspect has been identified as William DeFoor, a 26-year-old from the Cincinnati area. Authorities say he was detained just after midnight after allegedly smashing windows at Vance’s Ohio residence and attempting to get inside with a hammer.
The home was not occupied at the time. Vance, his wife Usha, and their three children were not in Ohio when the incident happened.
According to investigators, Secret Service agents stationed at the property heard a loud noise and moved quickly. They found a man who had already broken at least one window and was trying to enter the house. He was detained on the spot and later turned over to Cincinnati police.

Officials also say the suspect damaged a Secret Service vehicle while moving up the driveway. That detail alone raised the seriousness of the incident and triggered a wider security response.
As more information came out, the story grew more unsettling.
Records show DeFoor has a prior history with law enforcement. In 2023, he was arrested for trespassing at a psychiatric emergency services building. That case was later dismissed after he was found not competent to stand trial.
In 2024, he was arrested again on two counts of vandalism. Instead of jail time, he was granted treatment in lieu of conviction. Now, just a year later, he is accused of targeting the home of the Vice President of the United States.
Booking records show DeFoor is facing multiple charges, including criminal trespass, criminal damage, vandalism, and obstructing official business. A hold has been placed on him, meaning he cannot be released while the case moves forward.
Authorities have not yet said what motivated the break in. They have also not confirmed whether politics played a role. That silence has only added to the unease.
JD Vance addressed the situation briefly on social media, writing, “I appreciate everyone’s well wishes about the attack at our home. As far as I can tell, a crazy person tried to break in by hammering the windows.”
In recent years, threats against public officials have become more frequent and more personal. This was not a rally or a courthouse. It was a private home, in the middle of the night.
