Devout Catholic, Karoline Leavitt, Sparks Uproar After Publicly Rejecting Pope Leo’s Viral Comments

She completely missed the point

Before he became Pope Leo XIV, little Robert Prevost once used his family’s ironing board as an altar and handed out Necco wafers as Holy Communion. It’s fair to say the man has been serious about faith for a long time, and he’s still not afraid to speak his mind.

On Wednesday, Pope Leo spoke about what it really means to be “pro-life.” He said you cannot claim to protect life while also supporting cruel policies or the death penalty. His comments came after reporters asked him about the Trump administration’s record on immigration.

“Someone who says ‘I’m against abortion but says I am in favor of the death penalty’ is not really pro-life,” he said. “Someone who says that ‘I’m against abortion, but I’m in agreement with the inhuman treatment of immigrants in the United States,’ I don’t know if that’s pro-life.”

Those words did not sit well with the White House. Within hours, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt was standing at the podium, ready to defend her boss.

“I would reject there was inhumane treatment of illegal immigrants in the United States under this administration,” she said firmly. Then, without missing a beat, she shifted the blame. “There was significant inhumane treatment of illegal immigrants in the previous administration,” she added, pointing the finger at Joe Biden.

Leavitt went further and claimed that under Biden, migrants were “trafficked, and raped, and beaten, and in many cases killed.” Then she added, “You also have to look at the inhumane treatment at the hands of some of these illegal immigrants.”

The internet reacted fast to that line.

Leavitt is known for showing her faith proudly. She often wears a cross necklace and prays with her staff before speaking to the press. But her comments made many wonder how she balances her religious image with defending policies that even church leaders call cruel.

Pope Leo, on the other hand, has been clear about his views on the Trump team. Earlier this year, before he became Pope, he criticized Vice President JD Vance for saying that Christians should rank who they love most. “JD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn’t ask us to rank our love for others,” he said at the time.
