Donald Trump is facing trouble in Utah. This is a state that usually votes Republican. A new poll from Deseret News and the Hinckley Institute shows 52% of Utah voters think Trump is using too much power in his administration.
Utah has not voted for a Democratic president since 1964. Trump won the state in 2024 with 59.4% of the vote. In 2020, he got 58.2%.
White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson defended Trump. She said, “In a short time, President Trump has already delivered on many of the promises he was elected to enact. He’s secured the border; tackled [Joe] Biden’s inflation crisis; lowered drug prices; ended taxes on tips, overtime, and social security; cooled inflation; deported criminal illegal aliens; implemented important reforms putting American workers first; and more. As the architect of the MAGA movement, President Trump will always put America First. Every single day he’s working hard to continue fulfilling the many promises he made and he will continue delivering.”
Even so, only 31% of Utah voters said Trump is using the right amount of power. 9% said he is not doing enough. Among Utah Republicans, 29% said he is overreaching. The national number is lower at 21%.

Some of this may be linked to recent events in Utah politics. A judge adopted a new congressional map that helps Democrats win a seat. Republican House Speaker Mike Schultz said the timing made it hard to appeal.
If Trump is losing support in Utah, it could hurt Republicans in the 2026 midterms. The GOP has a small majority in the House with 219 seats. Losing a few could stop them from passing their plans.
Trump has also expanded executive power since returning to the White House in January. He has sent federal troops to several states, including Washington DC. He has signed many executive orders on immigration and funding. Some faced legal challenges.
This negative polling fits with national trends. An Economist and YouGov poll shows Trump’s approval at 39%, the lowest since he returned to office. 58% disapprove.
A Fox News poll shows 76% of voters view the economy negatively. This makes Trump less popular than Biden on the economy. Nate Silver says 55.9% now disapprove of Trump, higher than 54.9% at the same point in his first term.
Trump rejected the polls on Truth Social. He said, “So many Fake Polls are being shown by the Radical Left Media, all slanted heavily toward Democrats and Far Left Wingers…Fake News will never change, they are evil and corrupt but, as I look around my beautiful surroundings, I say to myself, ‘Oh, look, I’m sitting in the Oval Office!’”
