Ever since Bad Bunny was announced as the Super Bowl halftime show performer — and especially after the entertainer hosted Saturday Night Live over the weekend and joked that Americans need to “learn Spanish” before the show takes place next February — there’s been a full-fledged MAGA freakout over the NFL’s halftime show choice.
He’s been called a “demonic Marxist,” and the joke about Spanish has been treated like a genuine threat.
Bad Bunny is a demonic Marxist who was granted the most significant stage with the greatest audience in the middle of a Christian revival. This is by design. We are in a spiritual war and once you see it you can’t unsee it. pic.twitter.com/sEMfKIPbiC

Another common reaction to the Bad Bunny news has been a familiar conservative response to youth-oriented culture: claims that they have never heard of the performer before, so he must be bad.

That’s the tack taken by President Donald Trump, who addressed the Bad Bunny Super Bowl pick this week. Appearing on the Newsmax show of former Fox News reporter Greg Kelly, Trump was asked by Kelly, “The NFL just chose the Bad Bunny rabbit or whatever his name is… This guy, who hates ICE, he doesn’t like you, he accuses everything he doesn’t like of racism.” Kelly even went so far as to propose a boycott of the NFL over the Bad Bunny choice.
“I’ve never heard of him,” the president replied. “I don’t know who he is.”
“I don’t know why they’re doing it. It’s crazy. And then they blame it on some promoter they hired to pick up entertainment— I think it’s absolutely ridiculous,” he added. Rap star Jay-Z, also a sometime Trump enemy, has a deal with the NFL to help choose the Super Bowl halftime show performer.

There have been various attempts over the years, most of them very half-hearted, of right-wing boycotts of the NFL, especially during the era, in Trump’s first term, when Colin Kaepernick and other players were kneeling during the national anthem. But such boycotts have generally not been successful, with the NFL still largely the most popular thing on television most weeks.
Trump himself attended the Super Bowl this past year, although he appeared to leave before halftime.
