Former President Donald Trump prompted “nervous laughter” after he unleashed a rant about Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) during a closed-door meeting with about 100 business leaders, according to an excerpt from the new book “In Trump’s Shadow: The Battle for 2024 and the Future of the GOP” that was obtained by the Daily Mail.
The twice-impeached former president told the attendees at the meeting in 2019 that reelecting him would prevent Democrats’ progressive policies like Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal from coming into fruition. According to the book, Trump labeled AOC as a “failed geek” and said her outsized influence within the Democratic party makes “old men shiver in fear” in the halls of Congress.
Then he appeared to compare himself to the progressive firebrand.
“Let me tell you something about AOC,” he told the crowd. “Let me tell you something about her. I’ve watched her walk down the halls of Congress, and I see these old men shiver in fear—they shiver in fear whenever they see her. You want to know why? Because AOC has a base, just like me.”

According to the book, Trump’s comments elicited nervous laughter from the crowd.
“You definitely want to see me reelected if you want to keep being in business,” Trump said. “You’ve got this Green New Deal. It’s completely crazy. It’ll completely shut down American energy. And it’s from this failed geek, Alexandria Ocasio- Cortez. They call her AOC.”
Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, economic adviser Larry Kudlow, Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, and Ivanka Trump also attended the meeting.
Trump doesn’t know what’s in the Green New Deal.
When Trump spoke with Fox News’s Sean Hannity before the 2020 election, he falsely told the host that the Green New Deal would require builders to use “tiny little windows.” Trump said at the time, “I mean they literally want to take buildings down and rebuild them with tiny little windows, OK, little windows so you can’t see out, you can’t see the light.”
He called the deal the “Green new bullshit,” then bizarrely claimed that it would result in the abolition of windows, cows, and eventually people. “No more windows in buildings,” he said at the time.
Windows are not even mentioned in the 14-page Green New Deal.
