Amid the ongoing government shutdown, President Donald Trump addressed the matter to reporters over the weekend. On Sunday, he referred to the furloughs of government personnel as “Democrat layoffs.”

“I call them Democrat layoffs. They’re Democrat layoffs. They’re causing it,” Trump said on Sunday. “We’re reading to go back.”

“We have a record-setting economy,” Trump said. “We’re doing better than the country has ever done, and the Democrats hate seeing that. It’s up to them. Anybody laid off? That’s because of the Democrats.”

It led one commentator to call for the invocation of the 25th Amendment to remove the president from office.

Others of late have declared that Trump should be removed via the 25th Amendment, including MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell:

Per CNN, Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought warned House Republicans last week that there will be “imminent layoffs at federal agencies that don’t fit the administration’s priorities.”  Typically, during a government shutdown, nonessential federal workers are temporarily furloughed but return to their jobs once the shutdown is over, usually while receiving back pay for the time they were out of work.

CNBC reported on the mechanics of how the shutdown will work.

“About 750,000 federal employees are expected to be furloughed each day, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Hundreds of thousands more are required to keep working without pay until funding resumes, based on federal agency estimates, including essential staff like air traffic controllers and border patrol agents,” CNBC reported about the shutdown.
