Mitch McConnell’s office has put out exactly two photos meant to prove the 84-year-old senator is alive and recovering. A closer look at what his wife wore in them has turned into its own separate problem.
The first photo came from McConnell’s office on July 12.

The second followed in a press release on July 27, dated by his office to July 26, showing McConnell seated beside Elaine Chao, both smiling. Chao wears a white button-down patterned with peach-colored seashells and eggshell-white pants in that image.

The exact same outfit appears in a photo from July 15, when Chao was photographed leaving the Washington, D.C. rehabilitation center where McConnell is recovering, a long trench coat over what looks like the identical shirt. Her hair matches across both photos as well, despite the two images supposedly being taken eleven days apart. A reverse image search traced the shirt to Chico’s, a mid-tier American retail chain.

Jeff Yang, an author and podcaster who says he’s known Chao’s family since college, couldn’t make the outfit fit with the person he knows.
“I’ve known members of the Chao family—specifically, Elaine’s apolitical sisters (Grace and the late Angela)—since our college years,” he wrote on Bluesky. “I can’t imagine Elaine, one of the most put-together people in existence, releasing a pic wearing a thin shirt over a visible black bra, UNTUCKED. Just implausible.” He came back with a sharper follow-up shortly after. “ELAINE IS DEPICTED WEARING A $12 CHICO’S SHIRT. HOLY CRAP SHE WOULD RATHER DIE.”
The hair tells its own separate story.
Chao showed up days after the supposed July 26 photo with noticeably fuller hair, lighter and more reddish than what appears in the McConnell image, accepting the Donald D. Engen Trophy for Aviation Excellence at an Aero Club of D.C. lunch. Her husband wasn’t in any of the photos from that event.
McConnell’s office hasn’t responded to questions about either the timeline or Chao’s clothing, which lines up with how his team has handled everything else.
Outside the two proof-of-life photos, McConnell hasn’t addressed his constituents or released any video proving he’s able to carry out his Senate duties, and his staff, led by Terry Carmack, who’s on track to earn more than $226,000 this year, has repeated the same short statement, saying only that the senator “appreciates the outpouring of support” during his continued treatment.
