In what can only be described as a political disaster, JD Vance faced a hostile reception at the IAFF (International Association of Fire Fighters) union conference, with boos echoing through the room as he struggled to connect with his audience of firefighters and first responders. The event, held just a day after Minnesota Governor Tim Walz received a warm welcome at the same conference, highlighted the stark contrast between the two politicians’ approaches and their ability to resonate with working-class Americans.
Sounds like we got some fans and some haters, that’s okay, let’s listen to what I have to say here, and I’ll make my pitch here.
~JD Vance
A retired paramedic, who was present during Vance’s speech, took to Twitter to express his embarrassment at Vance’s performance, noting how the Ohio Senator’s attempts to rally support among first responders fell flat. The paramedic pointed out that public safety workers typically lean center-right and could have been a natural base for Vance. However, the applause lines were met with tepid responses, and at several points, the crowd even booed Vance, signaling a disconnect between the candidate and his audience.
I’m going to drop out of character a moment here on Twitter to say that I am listening to JD Vance live addressing IAFF Firefighters at the IAFF union convention. It is embarrassing. I’m a 15 year retired urban Paramedic and he should be able to get the support /x

One particularly tone-deaf moment occurred when Vance suggested that funds should be allocated to building new firehouses instead of migrant shelters—a line that, instead of galvanizing support, only received lukewarm applause. The audience, made up of individuals who regularly respond to humanitarian crises, seemed unimpressed by Vance’s simplistic political rhetoric that failed to address the complex realities they face daily.

The cringeworthy moments didn’t stop there. Vance also tried to score points by attacking COVID-19 vaccine mandates, promising that a Trump/Vance administration would protect “free speech” by not imposing such mandates in the future. This attempt to pander to the crowd once again fell flat, with the audience responding with little enthusiasm. The retired paramedic’s tweets summed up the atmosphere in the room: Vance sounded fake, out of touch, and more interested in scoring political points than addressing the real concerns of first responders.
Do Not Expect A Union Friendly President
JD Vance’s claim that he and Donald Trump are “pro-worker” is starkly contradicted by their track record, particularly Trump’s aggressive actions against collective bargaining and unions. Trump’s administration took numerous steps to weaken the rights of workers to organize and engage in collective bargaining, which is the cornerstone of union power. For instance, the Trump-appointed National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) systematically rolled back protections for workers, making it more difficult for unions to represent their members effectively. This included overturning rules that streamlined the union election process and undermining workers’ access to essential information during union organizing campaigns.
Additionally, Trump issued executive orders that directly attacked federal unions by limiting their ability to negotiate on behalf of employees and reducing the time union representatives could spend helping workers with grievances. His administration’s actions, such as supporting “right to work” laws and rescinding policies that required employers to disclose anti-union activities, further illustrate a clear hostility towards unions.
Given these actions, the idea that Trump and Vance could be “pro-union” is misleading at best. Their policies not only undermine collective bargaining—the very heart of union activities—but also favor corporate interests over the rights and well-being of workers. This contradiction highlights the disingenuousness of their pro-worker rhetoric.
Vance: Now, President Trump and I are proud to be the most pro-worker Republican ticket in history and I want to talk about why we’re fighting for working people .. why we’re going to fight for unions and non-union alike.
Crowd: Audible boos
