Former Manhattan prosecutor Jeremy Saland sat down with CNN’s Kate Bolduan today to discuss the newly uncovered trove of text messages from Kenneth Chesebro, Donald Trump’s former lawyer, that Saland says truly exposes the extent of the efforts gone to by Trump and his legal strategists to create a “fog of deceit” surrounding the 2020 presidential election.

Chesebro’s damning text messages went public on Monday and exposed the true extent of the then-Trump attorney’s efforts to fan the flames of insurrection among Donald Trump’s rabid supporters, only to attempt to smooth them over when things inevitably turned violent and deadly.

In the end, those incriminating texts could have a severe, negative impact on the election interference trial raging against Trump and his co-defendants in the state of Georgia.

Chesebro was originally a co-defendant in the Georgia election case right alongside his former boss, ex-President Trump. However, the former Trump attorney has since taken a plea deal with GA prosecutors, pleading guilty under a deal that required him to turn state evidence on the ex-president.

It remains unclear if these newly discovered text messages will affect Chesebro’s plea deal in any way.

“You point to one of these messages that Chesebro sent to [fellow attorney Jim] Troupis … in November of 2020,” CNN’s Bouldan said, before going on to read the text, “At minimum, with such a cloud of confusion, no votes from WI (and perhaps also MI and PA), should be counted perhaps enough to throw the election to the House.”

“Why does this one stand out to you?” she questioned.

“Because he uses a term, that cloud of confusion. It’s more like a fog of deceit,” Saland, a former Manhattan prosecutor answered.

“He has this real intention of saying, we’re going to throw a wrench, and not sort of, we in fact are going to try to throw a wrench into the system. We, in fact, are going to try to make this confusion so we can seize control and overturn that election.”

Ultimately, Saland said Chesebro wanted to do this “not because it’s based on the merits, because it’s based on what we want to do.”
