Florida House Republican Stuns By Turning On Trump Midway Through Her Own Campaign Ad

A Republican Congresswoman has broken with the president over immigration.

It’s very rare for a sitting Republican member of Congress to directly break with Donald Trump, let alone do so in a campaign advertisement. But that’s what Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL) did this week.

Salazar is locked in a close re-election race, which Florida Politics has described as a “true toss-up.”

“Mr. President, some of your immigration enforcement efforts have gone too far,” Salazar says in the ad, noting that 50 percent of ICE detainees in July had no criminal convictions or charges. “The same Hispanics who helped you get to the White House in 2024 feel betrayed today,” she added.

Salazar goes on to tell Trump to “be careful what your advisers are telling you about immigration policy,” adding, using a very tortured analogy, that “you can be for immigration what Lincoln was for slavery and Reagan was for communism.”

In late August, the New York Post reported that Salazar posted an X post criticizing Trump’s oil deal with Venezuela, before deleting that video and posted a different post, stating the opposite, calling the deal “a great deal for the United States and the Venezuelan people.”

A former journalist first elected in 2020, Salazar has had Trump’s backing in her races for the House, although she’s sometimes broken with Trump on immigration before. She won a contested primary in August.

Some social media users had thoughts on Salazar’s ad.
