Earlier this week, President Donald Trump posted a map of the Strait of Hormuz on Truth Social and declared it a “new U.S. territory.”

This was mostly mocked, since the Strait of Hormuz is heavily contested and not controlled by the U.S., despite Trump’s claims. Among the strongest critics was former Ambassador Michael McFaul, a longtime Trump critic.
“Just crazy,” McFaul said on X. “We are no longer a serious country, let alone a respected great power. Hoping the damage down right now can be reversed, but it’s going to take a lot of work and a lot of humility.”

McFaul was the U.S. ambassador to Russia between 2012 and 2014, during Barack Obama’s presidency. He was a frequent critic of Trump, especially during the Russiagate controversy.
As noted by Alternet, others have been harshly critical of Trump posting that Hormuz map, and of his approach to Iran more broadly. Among those was Andrew Weinstein, who also took to X.

“Yesterday: Jared Kushner publicly outlines active diplomatic backchannels with Iran. Today: Donald Trump claims ‘no talks are going on or scheduled’ and the Strait of Hormuz is magically open,” Weinstein stated.
“Either Donald Trump is completely untethered from geopolitical reality, or his inner circle is running a full-blown Truman Show operation to keep him from realizing what’s actually happening.”
There was other social media mockery as well:

The Brits tried that with the Dardanelles. That ended very badly. Think Trump might suffer a similar fate. The idiocy of all this. https://t.co/F6GL9TDATX

He’s lost his damn mind posting gibberish like this. It’s not a US territory https://t.co/SoSwYBtm2Z
