Former Trump Advisor Recalls Time POTUS Launched Blistering Attack At Him Over Melania: 'Why Are You Sitting Next To My Wife?'

Trump once looked down at Anthony Scaramucci across a White House dinner table and demanded to know why he was sitting next to Melania.

Scaramucci had no better answer than the truth. “For some reason I was sitting next to Melania. And he got pissed at me,” he told The Daily Beast Podcast, recalling the dinner in the White House’s Blue Room. “He’s a taller guy than me. And he looked over and looked down at me and he’s like: ‘Why are you sitting next to my wife?'”

His response didn’t require much thought.

“I looked at him and I’m like: ‘I have no idea. First of all, do you think I made the place cards? I have no idea why I’m sitting next to your wife.'” That seemed to settle it.

But once Trump accepted that the seating had nothing to do with his former aide, the mood shifted. Scaramucci’s own theory for the outburst had nothing to do with place cards at all. “I think it unnerves him when people have a good rapport with her,” he said.

And that rapport wasn’t exactly new. Scaramucci knew Melania from the campaign trail, well before his eleven-day run as communications director in 2017. “She was always very nice to me. I always liked her, my wife liked her. She was down to earth, classy,” he said.

Whatever rapport she had with Trump himself, however, looks different lately, at least by the numbers.

The Daily Beast’s own tracking counted 47 public appearances from Melania in 2025 after the inauguration, and only 38 across the first seven months of 2026, a pace well behind Michelle Obama, Jill Biden or Laura Bush at similar points in their own tenures.

For Scaramucci, that drop-off points to something more than a quieter public schedule.

He told host Joanna Coles that Melania used to serve as one of the only people capable of pulling Trump back from the edge. “When she was more friendly with him, she would tell him to tone it down and he would actually listen to her,” he said. “There’s very few people that Trump listens to.” Pressed on where the marriage stands now, he didn’t dress it up. “I think it’s distant for a number of different reasons,” he said. “But I think they probably have grown apart.”

And Scaramucci traced that distance back to before this term even started.

According to him, the wider Trump family never fully embraced a return to Washington. “The family unit that came into Trump 1.0 didn’t like it,” he said. “They didn’t like the blistering in Washington. They didn’t like the 360-degree firing squad. I don’t think they like the spotlight that was put on them.” He said they’d made their position clear before Trump ran again. “I think that when he ran again, they all more or less said, ‘okay, that, you know, that one was on all of us; this one’s on you.'”
