Donald Trump was impeached twice during his first term, neither of which prevented him from returning to the presidency. There have been a few efforts in Congress to pursue impeachment in Trump’s second term, but none have gained much traction.

Now, one former government official is calling for the president to be impeached.

John Mitnick, a former government official in the George W. Bush Administration who helped create the Department of Homeland Security after the 9/11 attacks, said on X Sunday that Trump deserves impeachment, due to the Trump DHS’s “lawlessness, fascism, and cruelty.”

Mitnick later served as DHS’s general counsel in Trump’s first term, although he was fired from that job after clashing with Stephen Miller, the New York Times reported at the time.

“I helped to establish DHS in 2002 and 2003 and later had the homeland security portfolio as a White House Counsel and served as General Counsel of the Department. I am enraged and embarrassed by DHS’s lawlessness, fascism, and cruelty. Impeach and remove Trump—now,” Mitnick said on X.

Mitnick, despite a career working in Republican administrations, endorsed Kamala Harris for president in 2024.

“I was a senior, Senate-confirmed appointee in the Trump administration. I saw it from the inside. It was a chaotic disaster. I am also a lifelong conservative, a former Republican nominee for Congress, and a former White House Counsel,” Mitnick wrote on X just before the 2024 election.

“Trump is reckless, angry, vengeful, and narcissistic, and he has no respect for the Constitution or the rule of law,” he wrote in the 2024 thread. “He is not a conservative; rather, he is a would-be autocrat and fascist motivated exclusively by his personal self-interest. If you think he cares about you or your family, I assure you that he does not. He cares only about himself.”
