Life off the field can be tougher than any game, and this week, Mark Teixeira learned just how brutal politics can be.
The ex-slugger, best known for his years with the New York Yankees, is now running for Congress in Texas. He proudly shared that he has the endorsement of Donald Trump. On X, he thanked the president and even added that Trump was a “fan.” It felt like a victory lap, until it suddenly wasn’t.

During a recent speech in Texas, Donald Trump brought up Mark Teixeira in what was meant to boost his campaign, but it soon turned awkward when he struggled with Teixeira’s name and praised him for how hard he could “throw that ball,” a line that baseball fans instantly picked apart for one simple reason.

Teixeira was not a pitcher.
He was a first baseman. A three-time All-Star. A five-time Gold Glove winner. He hit 409 home runs in his career. He drove in 1,298 RBIs. In 2009, he led the American League in home runs. His legacy was built on power hitting and elite defense at first base. Not on throwing heat from the mound.
Because of that, critics took over social media, joking about the baseball slip and his political alignment.

Meanwhile, supporters pushed back. They argued that Trump’s praise, even if awkward, still matters in a Republican primary. After all, Teixeira is running in Texas’ 21st Congressional District, a conservative area currently represented by Chip Roy, who is now seeking the state’s attorney general position. In that kind of race, a Trump endorsement can carry weight. Even so, perception is powerful.
