Of all the things to accidentally admit, “I’ve done a shitty job as president” wasn’t the one Trump’s team probably had in the briefing notes.
The line came Monday during Trump’s announcement that the federal government now has its own AI chatbot, a project he was clearly proud of and trying to hype up for reporters. Mid-sentence, the pride turned into something closer to a confession. “If it is the biggest thing I’ve ever done, I’ve done a shitty job as President,” he said. “But you know what? It’s damn good.”
The full quote included a real compliment buried inside it, aimed at the chatbot itself rather than his own track record. That context didn’t survive the editing process once clips started circulating. Within minutes, the sentence had been isolated down to its most damaging five words: “I’ve done a shitty job as president.”
One widely shared post paired the clip with a short, pointed line. “Trump: ‘I’ve done a shitty job as president.’ Well there you have it, folks. You have heard it from the horse’s mouth,” it read.

The chatbot announcement itself got largely lost in the fallout. The actual project, America.gov, launched the same day as a “single digital point of entry” meant to simplify how Americans find federal information and services, according to the White House’s own fact sheet, which noted that citizens spend roughly 10 billion hours a year on government paperwork. Trump also used the event to thank Elon Musk for championing the broader effort to modernize government technology.
