US credibility on thin ice

German President Frank‑Walter Steinmeier slammed Donald Trump’s war in Iran, calling it “a disastrous mistake” and a clear violation of international law. Rarely does a close ally speak so sharply about US actions, making this rebuke stand out.

Steinmeier said the conflict has seriously damaged Germany’s ties with Washington, comparing the fallout to the rupture caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“Our foreign policy does not become more convincing just because we do not call a breach of international law a breach of international law,” he said in a speech this week. “We must address this with regard to the war in Iran. For, in my view, this war is contrary to international law.”

He said the justification offered for military strikes did not hold up and described the conflict as unnecessary and a “politically disastrous mistake.”

Steinmeier added that he believes there will be no simple return to the way things were in transatlantic relations before Trump took office in 2025.

Steinmeier’s remarks stand out because German leaders usually avoid direct criticism of the United States. But this time he spoke without diplomatic cushioning, reflecting deep concern in parts of Europe about the direction of US foreign policy under Trump.

Some leaders in the EU have echoed similar worries.

France’s President Emmanuel Macron has criticized strikes outside international law and called for diplomatic engagement, saying Europe cannot simply follow the US without questioning the legality of actions. Several EU countries, including Germany and the United Kingdom, issued statements condemning Iranian attacks, but also expressed unease about how the conflict escalated.

Steinmeier also touched on broader strategic issues. He said Germany must reduce “excessive dependencies” on the United States, especially in defense and technology. He argued that Europe should build up its own technology base, with a focus on ethical standards and independence rather than relying on US‑dominated systems.

Economic issues also form part of Steinmeier’s message.

Recent data show China overtook the United States as Germany’s top trading partner in the first 8 months of 2025. Higher US tariffs and trade disputes have hurt German exports, putting pressure on relations with Washington even before the war in Iran added more complications.

Steinmeier didn’t just talk law and security. He pointed to the growing economic and geopolitical shifts that are reshaping Europe’s view of Washington. Trade, technology, and energy policies are all in flux as Europe recalibrates its position in a world where US leadership is no longer taken for granted.
