Donald Trump welcomed the USA men’s hockey team to the White House on Tuesday night after their gold medal win over Canada. The players sat in the House gallery as the chamber erupted with chants of “U-S-A, U-S-A!”

Trump took the chance to announce that goaltender Connor Hellebuyck would receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Lawmakers and guests applauded as the team was recognized for its victory.

After the State of the Union, a video showed Trump meeting the players with an unusual spread: stacks of McDonald’s double cheeseburgers. Patriotic songs played in the background while the players grabbed burgers and posed for photos.

Nick Sortor shared the clip online: “President Trump catered McDONALD’s for Team USA at the White House today, bringing in STACKS of double cheeseburgers. All while patriotic songs BLASTED in the background.”

The players had already celebrated their win the night before in Miami. Former NFL punter Pat McAfee covered the bill at a nightclub as his way of honoring the gold medal performance. Then the team flew to Washington on Air Force One.

Some fans were unhappy after Trump made comments about the USA women’s hockey team. But the focus stayed on the men’s team and their Olympic success.

The McDonald’s spread caught everyone off guard. Stacks of burgers aren’t normal at the White House. The team laughed, held burgers, and posed with Trump, leaving viewers both amused and confused online.

Despite the burgers, the awards were serious. The Presidential Medal of Freedom honors extraordinary contributions. Hellebuyck’s goalkeeping helped the team win gold and bring pride to fans across the country.
