For most major political figures, it’s not usually a matter of dispute whether or not they’re dead. But that appears to be the case with Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), the longtime Senate majority leader who remains a sitting U.S. senator.
McConnell has been hospitalized for more than two weeks, but few details have been shared about his condition. Pro-Trump CNN personality Scott Jennings said earlier this week that he had spoken to McConnell, seeming to contradict rumors that the senator was “brain dead.” But McConnell’s staff and family have not been forthright about his current status.
Then, on Thursday morning, one Republican member of Congress gave a television interview in which he was asked if McConnell was still alive, and had no answer.
Rep. Marlin Stutzman (R-IN) appeared on NewsNation and was asked about McConnell’s condition.
On @NewsNation today, GOP Congressman @RepStutzman was asked whether he knows if Senator Mitch McConnell is alive.
Stutzman said, “I don’t.”

“I have not heard from him, and I think it’s a question that Republicans should be asking because he does represent the state of Kentucky,” Stutzman said during his appearance on the “Morning in America” show. “His constituents deserve answers where he is at.”
“As a Republican, I think we need to hold our own party accountable, so the fact that we haven’t heard anything really from Sen. McConnell is very discouraging and concerning,” he added.
On Wednesday, Gov. Andy Beshear sent a letter to the office of U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell requesting an update on his health and well-being amid growing concerns around the Senator’s ability to serve.

“Do you know that he’s alive? I don’t,” Stutzman added. “The things that I’ve heard and seen from some friends are that he’s obviously not doing well, but I don’t know if he’s alive or has passed away.”
Stutzman is a member of Congress who is loyal to President Donald Trump, while McConnell, despite belonging to the same party, is a longtime Trump enemy, as Trump considers him disloyal.
Gov. Andy Beshear, the Democratic governor of McConnell’s home state of Kentucky, has also written a letter, demanding answers on McConnell’s condition.
