Rep. Thomas Massie says President Donald Trump went too far after making personal attacks about both his late wife and his current wife.

The exchange happened Monday night on the steps of the U.S. Capitol. CNN’s Manu Raju asked Massie to respond to Trump’s recent posts.

Massie went straight for it. “He went after my late wife and my current wife,” Massie said. When pressed on what he thought about that, he added, “I think it’s a new low for him, but again, we laughed it off. It’s more to his detriment than mine that he, you know, put something like that out. But I think that it was beyond the pale.”

The incident comes after Massie and other Republicans secured enough votes to pass a bill demanding the release of files related to Jeffrey Epstein. Massie described it as a long-awaited victory.

“The Speaker, the Attorney General, the FBI Director, the President, and the Vice President could have saved us all this time and an embarrassment, frankly, for our own party if they’d just done the right thing four months ago,” Massie said.

Raju asked whether Trump and others might try to block the release. Massie warned that legal provisions could be used to prevent it. “I’m afraid they’re going to try to use a provision of the law that allows you not to release these materials if they’re the subject of an ongoing investigation and the release of which would harm the ongoing investigation,” he said.

While the legal fight plays out, attention turned to Trump’s personal attacks. Over the weekend, Trump posted to Truth Social, mocking Massie’s marriage and calling him a “LOSER.”

The post read, in part, “Did Thomas Massie, sometimes referred to as Rand Paul Jr., because of the fact that he always votes against the Republican Party, get married already??? Boy, that was quick! No wonder the Polls have him at less than an 8% chance of winning the Election. Anyway, have a great life Thomas and (?). His wife will soon find out that she’s stuck with a LOSER!”

Massie shrugged off the insults publicly, but his comments suggest the attacks hit a nerve. Lawmakers say the president’s focus on personal matters, rather than policy, has been a distraction in recent weeks.
