Affording groceries is a necessary task that’s getting harder and harder to achieve these days. Most households require two incomes, sometimes with multiple jobs per person, and it’s still a struggle to make ends meet, with no end to the madness in sight.
Suffice it to say, most average Americans will take any tips, tricks, or hacks they can to help save a few bucks on the food bill every week – and that’s exactly what Chef Will Coleman gave us.
Coleman, the New York based culinary expert and social media influencer who goes by @chefwillco on TikTok and Instagram, shared his “6 to 1 grocery shopping method” that he swears by to save working families hundreds of dollars in cash spent to feed their household.
In his TikTok clip that went viral on the short-form video social media platform, boasting close to a million views and counting, Chef Coleman says, “Whenever you go grocery shopping… use the 6 to 1 method. You grab six veggies, five fruits, four proteins, three starches, two sauces or spreads, and one fun thing for yourself.”

Not only does Chef Coleman encourage families to use this hack to save money in the grocery store aisles, but adds that it makes the trip to the store a whole lot quicker and much more fun.
Speaking to People Magazine about the method he formulated for more cost-effective shopping and better quality food, Coleman said, “Fruits and vegetables are usually on the lower end of things, and they can stretch beyond one meal. You can be way more creative about what you’re putting out in the kitchen, and of course, it’s healthier as well.”
“People [can be] a little scared of using vegetables, or they [don’t] know you can even cook with six different vegetables,” the Brooklyn-based culinary expert said. “But vegetables are affordable and versatile. You can get them pre-cut, pre-made, pre-roasted.”
Coleman posted a follow-up video, showing four full meals he made with his 6-to-1 grocery shopping method.
“You can do this for a household of two or four or six or eight. It doesn’t matter. You can make it work for yourself — and the way to go about that is to just grab a few more of the single items you choose in each category for your family,” the chef said.
