Images Of White House Demolition Leaves Americans Outraged

This is insane

The White House is being torn apart, literally. Demolition started Monday on the East Wing to make room for President Trump’s new $250 million ballroom.

Photos shared with The Post show crews removing the covered entrance that has welcomed visitors for decades. Windows facing the Treasury Department are broken and hanging loose, and the upstairs calligraphy office has a large hole.

A video shows a big demolition machine pulling apart the building while water sprays to keep down the dust. The East Wing, built in 1942, has long held the first lady’s offices and sits above a bomb shelter.

Trump is extending the East Wing to the south to fit the new ballroom. Several trees have already been cut down to make room. The design comes from his gold ballroom at Mar a Lago in Palm Beach, the same one used for major events and his campaign launch.

The reaction online was instant. People called the demolition horrific and unnecessary.

The East Room has always been the main event space at the White House, seating about 200 guests. But Trump wants more. “We’re gonna have a phenomenal ballroom,” he told donors last week. “This is gonna be one of the best anywhere in the world. There won’t be anything like it, actually. And it’s four sides of glass, beautiful glass, but totally appropriate in color and in window shape, and everything else with the White House.”

His second term construction projects have outpaced anything seen before. So far, he has added massive flagpoles to both lawns, paved the Rose Garden with white stone, covered the Oval Office and Cabinet Room in gold leaf, gutted the Lincoln Bedroom’s bathroom, replaced marble in the Palm Room, and installed his “Presidential Walk of Fame” along the West Wing Colonnade.
