While on stage in Pennsylvania, Donald Trump opened his speech by saying he planned to focus on the economy. But the rally quickly shifted after he launched into unusual praise for White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. He called her a “superstar,” the crowd roared, and the clip took off online.
Then he pushed it further.
“Isn’t she great? Is Karoline great?” Trump said. “You know, when she goes on television, Fox, like, I mean, they dominate, they dominate, when she gets up there with that beautiful face.”
The line struck many the wrong way, and the backlash intensified when Trump followed it with another comment that left critics visibly uneasy.
“And those lips that don’t stop. Pop-pop-pop-pop, like a little machine gun,” he said. “She’s got no fear and you know why she has no fear? Because we have the right policy.”

In the real world, if the boss talked about an employee like that, there would be human resources involved, and there would be some kind of lawsuit for harassment

That’s gross and disgusting.

This wasn’t the first time Trump, 79, commented on his 28-year-old press secretary’s looks. But this time, it felt different. Many viewers said praising Leavitt during an economy speech was out of place, especially as people want straight answers about rising prices.
The comments also distracted from his main message. The speech was meant to defend his economic record, but Trump’s focus on Leavitt’s appearance created a whole new story.
