In a fiery live TV interview, Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake clashed with NBC’s Mark Curtis, sparking yet another confrontation about her ongoing election fraud claims. Lake’s frustration was evident as Curtis questioned the validity of her repeated lawsuits challenging the 2022 election. Curtis pointed out that Lake’s legal battles have consistently failed in court, asking, “At what point does your narrative become fake news with your lawsuit once again in front of the Arizona Supreme Court?”

Lake’s Unfounded Claims and Legal Battles

Since losing to Democrat Katie Hobbs in the 2022 Arizona gubernatorial election, Lake has been vocal about alleged election fraud, frequently citing irregularities on Election Day. One of her primary claims centers on malfunctioning voting equipment, which she alleges disenfranchised thousands of voters. In the interview with Curtis, Lake framed his inquiries as an endorsement of corrupt election practices. “I’m glad to know that you’re okay with election day being run with equipment that doesn’t work in 61% of polling locations,” she remarked, attempting to discredit his question by turning it into an accusation.

Lake has filed multiple lawsuits challenging the election results, but none have succeeded. Arizona courts, both state and federal, have rejected her claims due to a lack of evidence. Nevertheless, she continues to pursue legal avenues, most recently taking her case to the Arizona Supreme Court. Despite her claims of widespread disenfranchisement and fraud, courts have consistently found her arguments to be unsubstantiated.

In a notable post-speech interview at the Republican National Convention in July 2024, Lake doubled down on her election fraud narrative, dismissing her repeated legal losses. “It’s at the Arizona Supreme Court, and we’ll see what happens,” she stated defiantly.  Her ongoing lawsuits have done little to sway public opinion beyond her hardcore supporters, as her claims have repeatedly been disproven by evidence and legal judgments.

Lake’s Rhetoric and the MAGA Base

Lake’s fiery rhetoric, much like Donald Trump’s, appeals to the MAGA base. She often frames the media as complicit in suppressing the “truth” about election fraud, branding any outlet or individual questioning her claims as part of the “fake news” machine. During her confrontation with Curtis, she lashed out at him for questioning the legitimacy of her lawsuits. Her signature style involves turning every challenge into a personal attack on her integrity or the integrity of the voting system.

In her interview with Curtis, Lake repeated the claim that Curtis and those like him “don’t care about election integrity.” When pressed on the legitimacy of her ongoing legal battles, she sarcastically repeated the same accusation, dodging the question altogether and leaving the conversation unresolved. Curtis’ pointed inquiry—“Tell me where I’m wrong, Kari”—was met with evasion rather than a substantive response.

AZ Central said this:

The media are big boys. They dish it out, they can stand to take some hits.

But what should have been a cordial interview after her big moment in Milwaukee became a grease fire on Valley television.

By the end, Lake would lose her composure and personally insult Curtis over and over.

Legal Failures and Court Dismissals

Lake’s lawsuits have systematically failed. Her claims of malfunctioning voting machines, widespread voter suppression, and fraudulent ballots have all been dismissed in courtrooms across Arizona. Following the 2022 election, Lake and her legal team launched a series of lawsuits, hoping to overturn the results. The courts, however, ruled that her allegations lacked credible evidence. Judges have described her claims as speculative and insufficient to warrant a legal reversal of the election outcome.

Even after these judicial rebukes, Lake has not relented. As of July 2024, she remains embroiled in a lawsuit in the Arizona Supreme Court, still attempting to challenge the legitimacy of her loss. However, her persistence in legal battles has done little to bolster her case outside of her fervent supporters, many of whom share her distrust of the election system.

Election Integrity or Political Opportunism?

Lake’s unrelenting claims of election fraud have, unsurprisingly, earned her both fierce loyalty and intense opposition. Her interview with Curtis exemplifies the divide she represents in Arizona politics and beyond. To her supporters, she is a champion for election integrity, relentlessly pursuing justice against a corrupt system. But to her critics, Lake is merely prolonging baseless claims of fraud that undermine faith in democratic institutions.

This unyielding stance was captured succinctly in an Arizona Republic opinion piece, which highlighted Lake’s combative nature. Her refusal to acknowledge her legal defeats, the article notes, does not bode well for a candidate needing to appeal to more than just the MAGA base. “It was a made-for-MAGA moment—certainly not the stuff of a candidate who desperately needs to figure out a way to appeal to those McCain Republicans and independents she spent three years savaging”.

Lake’s adherence to her election fraud narrative is, in many ways, emblematic of the broader crisis of democracy seen in the post-2020 era. While her lawsuits continue to fail, and while courts continue to uphold the legitimacy of Arizona’s election results, the damage to public trust has already been done.
