While defending Donald Trump on Thursday, Karoline Leavitt accidentally confirmed what the White House has been denying for weeks. Speaking to reporters during the daily briefing, she admitted that the ongoing government shutdown is hurting everyday people.
“Innocent Americans are suffering,” Leavitt said from the podium.
She described the shutdown’s impact across the country, starting with air traffic controllers who are now driving for Uber just to pay their bills. They are still working without pay, and many are struggling to get by.
Leavitt said pilots are also sounding the alarm. “Pilots are calling on Democrats to end this dangerous political game,” she added, attempting to shift blame.

As Thanksgiving travel nears, she warned the situation could get much worse. “If the Democrats continue to keep the government closed, we fear there will be significant flight delays, disruptions, and cancellations in major airports across the country this holiday season,” she said. Her comments made it clear that the shutdown is placing huge pressure on the nation’s travel system at the worst possible time.
Leavitt continued laying out the shutdown’s effects, even as she tried to argue that the administration is not at fault. She highlighted unpaid workers, missed checks, and major programs losing funding.
“Senate Democrats have voted twelve separate times now to keep the government closed. Innocent Americans are suffering every day as a result. More than 500,000 civilian federal employees will miss a full paycheck tomorrow,” she said. The number underscored how far the shutdown’s impact has spread.
She then turned to food assistance, revealing that SNAP benefits are already starting to dry up in some states. Millions of families could be left without support in just days. “That is next week,” she said, stressing that more than 40 million Americans may be affected by November 1.
