Donald Trump certainly enjoys the adoration of his fans. But as he repeatedly demonstrates, he doesn’t have much respect for them.

The latest revelation comes from leaked audio from The Guardian of Trump speaking at a fundraiser in Aspen in August. Sure, Trump made shocking claims about immigrants and also threatened that 2024 “could be the last election we ever have,” in the event of a Kamala Harris victory.

“These are the toughest people,” Trump said of migrants in the leaked recording. “These people are coming in from Africa, from the Middle East. They’re coming in from all parts of Asia, the bad parts, the parts where they’re rough, and the only thing good is they make our criminals look extremely nice. They make our Hell’s Angels look like the nicest people on earth.” Trump normally uses the word “tough” as a compliment, although that’s not so much the case when it comes to immigrants.

But the headline claim, somehow, was even worse than that.

When discussing the aftermath of the assassination attempt against him in Pennsylvania this summer, Trump discussed efforts of Mar-a-Lago members to raise money for the family of Corey Comperatore, the firefighter killed in the assassination attempt.

“I said absolutely and they gave me a cheque for a million dollars. That’s a lot of money. Maybe even more impressively we put out a GoFundMe and we raised more than $6m for the group that got hurt, which is essentially three people,” Trump said in Aspen, per The Guardian.

Later, he told the fundraiser, Trump met with Comperatore’s widow, Helen.

“So they’re going to get millions of dollars but the woman, the wife, this beautiful woman, I handed her the cheque – we handed her the cheque – and she said, ‘This is so nice, and I appreciate it, but I’d much rather have my husband.’ Now, I know some of the women in this room wouldn’t say the same.”

Guests at the fundraiser, per the report, “erupted in laughter.” Attendees at the fundraiser paid anywhere between $25,000 to $500,000 a couple.

As noted by Mediaite, Trump has made similar comments at at least one rally.

The Guardian does not appear to have released the audio of the speech. Mitt Romney, the Republican nominee in 2012, was caught on tape, also at a fundraiser, stating that 47 percent of Americans “take personal responsibility and care for their lives,” and it was seen as a pivotal moment in that presidential race.
