MAGA Revolt Intensifies After Top Conservative Publicly Embarrasses Trump

Is the GOP base finally deserting Donald Trump?

As the first year of his second presidency nears its end, is Donald Trump finally losing his base?

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), long one of Trump’s staunchest allies in Congress, broke with Trump and announced that she’ll be resigning her seat in Congress in January, and a report earlier this week by Punchbowl News predicted that more GOP resignations are coming as frustration mounts.

Meanwhile, others in the MAGA grassroots are making their unhappiness known. And that includes Erick Erickson, a longtime conservative pundit and talk show host. Erickson has been critical of Trump in the past, including a long run as a “never Trumper,” although he backed Trump’s runs for president in 2020 and 2024.

On X this week, Erickson ripped several recent actions by what he called “the kids in the Executive Branch, working on behalf of the President”: This included that they “pushed the President on a plan to extend Obamacare subsidies without having buy in from House and Senate Republicans,” they “elevated the stature of Democratic Senator Mark Kelly as Democrats had been flirting with Gavin Newsom,” they “put out a Ukraine plan no one really likes” and “failed to fill 18 judicial vacancies in 9 red states that have been open for months.”

“It looks like amateur hour has returned,” he concluded.”

The Mark Kelly mention was a reference to the “Department of War,” earlier this week, threatening to call the Democratic senator back to active duty in order to court-martial him, and implicitly do the same to other Democrats who participated in the recent video reminding active-duty troops that they do not have to follow illegal orders.

Kelly’s speech in that matter is almost certainly covered under the Constitution’s Speech and Debate clause, which gives elected members of Congress strong protections against prosecution for speech during the course of their duties.

Erickson ripped the Administration further, in the Kelly matter, later in the day:
