Melania Trump, the First Lady of the United States, has long claimed she can speak six languages fluently: English, German, French, Italian, Serbo-Croatian, and her native Slovenian. However, her recent visit to victims of the Pacific Palisades fires in Los Angeles has raised serious questions about the truth behind these claims.
During her visit, Melania spoke to a Serbian woman who had fled the war in Croatia. At first, Melania seemed to speak Slovenian, as some assumed. Twitter user Johnny Maga (@_johnnymaga) even called the moment historic, claiming she spoke Slovenian to connect with the victims.

However, this claim was quickly fact-checked. Twitter’s community notes revealed she was not speaking Slovenian but Serbo-Croatian instead. Keenan Peachy, another user, shared a link confirming that the woman Melania spoke with was Serbian and that their conversation was in Serbo-Croatian.
Yes, the couple on TV who was talking to the Trumps I know very well! They have two young boys and lost it all in the Palisades fire. She was a Serbian war refugee – as a child her family fled the war for the U.S. she was speaking her native Serbo Croatian with our First Lady.…

This revelation reignited debates about Melania’s language abilities, leaving many questioning whether she is fluent in languages other than English and Slovenian.
Melania has often been celebrated for her supposed multilingual skills, which make her seem cultured and sophisticated. However, her public appearances sometimes suggest otherwise.
For example, during a 2017 visit to a Paris school, Melania greeted children in French. While it impressed some, others weren’t convinced. John Aravosis, who speaks French fluently, analyzed her interaction in a YouTube video. He noted that a fluent French speaker would have said far more than Melania did.
Similar doubts surfaced during the G7 summit when Melania used a translator to follow French President Emmanuel Macron’s speech. Critics found it odd that someone claiming to speak French fluently needed translation.
Another incident occurred during her visit to Italy. While visiting a children’s hospital, Melania greeted the children in Italian but quickly switched to English. Language experts criticized her Italian as very basic, comparing it to what someone might learn in their first week of language lessons.
Being multilingual is a valuable skill, especially for someone in a global position like the First Lady. If Melania truly spoke six languages fluently, she could have used this skill to connect with people from diverse cultures and strengthen international relationships. However, if her claims are exaggerated, it raises questions about honesty and authenticity.
Melania Trump’s visit to the Pacific Palisades fire victims was meant to show her care, but it has made people question whether she speaks six languages. Her actions and public appearances suggest that her claims might not be as true as she claims.
