Melania Opens Up Navy Celebration With Speech To The Cadets And People Have Some Thoughts

Not exactly a morale boost

The Navy turned 250 today, and First Lady Melania Trump was given the honor of kicking things off. What followed was not exactly the rousing moment organizers probably had in mind.

Melania walked on stage at Naval Station Norfolk wearing a white USA baseball cap, waved to the crowd of sailors, and greeted them with a loud, repeated, “Hooya Navy.”

There was applause, but only after a brief pause that made the greeting feel more awkward than spirited. The Navy’s famous battle cry is usually a sharp show of energy. Today it landed with an odd stillness before the clapping began.

Online reaction was quick.

Melania kept her remarks short and then introduced her husband, President Donald Trump. When he took the stage and used his own bit of Navy slang, the crowd cheered with more enthusiasm, as if relieved the first awkward moment had passed.

The First Lady’s speeches often face scrutiny, partly because of her accent and sometimes because of her delivery. One X user joked today, “Bad Bunny’s English is by far better that First Lady Melania.”

The celebration took place as the country remains in the middle of a government shutdown. Trump dismissed that in a morning post on Truth Social, writing, “I believe, THE SHOW MUST GO ON. This will be the largest Celebration in the History of the Navy.”

He went further during his speech, accusing Democrats of wanting “illegal aliens” to receive free healthcare at the expense of Americans. He also claimed they were trying “to destroy this wonderful celebration of the US Navy’s Birthday.”
