First Lady Melania Trump has been known to cultivate an air of mystery. And in keeping with that, the first lady announced Thursday that she will make an announcement Friday at the White House.

While it’s not clear what the First Lady has planned, speculation has been that the announcement will entail the rollout of Melania, the documentary about the First Lady that was announced earlier this year. Several Hollywood trade publications had stories on Thursday about the release plans.

Per a Deadline story, published on Thursday, Melania is set for release in January in theaters and will land on Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service after that. The film was directed by Brett Ratner, an often-controversial Hollywood figure who made the Rush Hour films, among other blockbusters, before falling into exile due to sexual misconduct allegations.

Reporting earlier this year indicated that Melania had been paid $40 million by Amazon for her participation in the documentary, which is both an unusually high budget for a documentary film, and an unusually high amount to be paid to the subject of a documentary.

Melania offers unprecedented access to the 20 days leading up to the 2025 Presidential Inauguration through the eyes of the First Lady-Elect herself. Viewers will be able to step inside Melania Trump’s world as she orchestrates inauguration plans, navigates the complexities of the White House transition, and reenters public life with her family,” the Deadline story says. “With exclusive footage capturing critical meetings, private conversations, and never-before-seen environments, the film showcases Mrs. Trump’s return to one of the world’s most powerful roles.”

The filmmakers are also, per Deadline, “currently finishing an accompanying three-part docuseries.”

The 2026 release date, and the lack of a qualifying release date in December, would seem to indicate that the Melania film will not be submitted for Academy Awards consideration. Although it’s not hard to imagine Donald Trump firing off an angry social media post, about the lack of an Oscar nomination for his wife’s documentary.
