Melania Trump Slammed As ‘Tone Deaf’ After Flaunting Lavish White House Meal

Next week, the White House hosts a state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping, part of a high-profile visit covering trade, AI, and national security.

Melania Trump gave the public an early look.

On September 17, she posted a nine-second, largely black-and-white video showing off preparations for the event. “THE WHITE HOUSE STATE DINNER,” she wrote on X. “Every detail considered. An experience thoughtfully conceived and exquisitely realized for our distinguished guests.”

Reaction landed fast, and it wasn’t the reception she seemed to be going for.

The cost-of-living angle kept coming up in nearly every reply.

Writer Heidi tied it to the administration as a whole: “While Americans are not able to afford groceries or gasoline, I ask you… Has there ever been a more completely tone deaf administration?”

Melania has encountered this before.

Her July 2025 visit to patients at Children’s National Hospital came the same week her husband signed a bill cutting nearly $1 trillion from Medicaid, and it quickly became a point of criticism. The reaction also brought back a leaked 2018 recording where she said, “I’m working … my a– off on the Christmas stuff. Who gives a f— about the Christmas stuff and decorations?”

Ivanka Trump caught similar heat earlier this month too, for posting vacation photos of her daughter horseback riding on a beach, timing that struck plenty of people as equally out of step with how many Americans are feeling financially right now.

The guest list for next week’s dinner includes Nvidia’s Jensen Huang and OpenAI’s Sam Altman, according to CNBC, alongside other prominent business leaders.

A White House official framed the invitations as strategic rather than social, saying in a statement, “President Trump has invited several great American business leaders to his dinner with President Xi because he will always prioritize making good deals for our country.”
