Sounds memorized

Melania Trump’s recent public appearance with Donald Trump has left some viewers questioning her supposed fluency in six languages.

Ron Smith tweeted, “Melania Trump can barely put together words in English yet they say she speaks six languages. I don’t buy it.”

His comment was quickly echoed by others online.

Charles Perreira added, “Melania Trump can barely string together a coherent sentence in English, yet somehow the narrative is that she speaks six languages fluently. Let’s be honest nobody’s buying that. Fluency isn’t just memorizing words it’s thinking, joking, and arguing in another language. By that standard, this ‘six languages’ claim is pure fantasy.”

Others weighed in more sarcastically. Abbe Logan pointed out, “And it appears she plagiarized this ‘speech.’ Yes, again.”

This refers to her 2016 Republican National Convention speech, when she was accused of lifting passages from former First Lady Michelle Obama’s 2008 address.

Shamama Abbasi commented, “I had hard time understanding her words, seriously her English is embarrassingly bad even after living in the U.S for over 3 decades sounds insane.”

Kim Rinabarger added a dry take: “Maybe someone who initially wrote that got confused. Maybe she knows how to say ‘That’ll be $300.00 an hour’ in six languages.”

According to her White House biography, Melania was born in Slovenia. Many reports say she speaks six languages, but evidence is thin.

Videos of her speaking French, Italian, or other languages are rare. Most of the time, she uses a translator or sticks to English. In 2019, Snopes noted that she needed an Italian translator when meeting Pope Francis.

Other visits to hospitals in France and Italy show her using only simple greetings like “Bonjour” or “Ciao,” then speaking in English.

During a 2017 visit to a children’s hospital in Rome, she said, “Come stai?” which means “How are you?” This is a short, informal greeting, not a conversation.

She still speaks Slovenian. In a 2016 BBC interview, former Miss Slovenia Natasa Pinoza said, “She spoke back to me in Slovene,” even though Pinoza was ready to speak English.

A 2020 biography by journalist Mary Jordan, The Art of Her Deal: The Untold Story of Melania Trump, found no proof that Melania speaks languages beyond English and Slovenian. Jordan also said her son Barron speaks Slovenian at home with the family.
