Michelle Obama hit the campaign trail on behalf of Kamala Harris on Saturday, laying into Donald Trump at a campaign event in Kalamazoo, Michigan, alongside the candidate. That’s one of the most closely contested primary states, with Harris currently leading polling averages by less than a percentage point.

While Michelle Obama spoke at the Democratic convention this summer, this was her first headlining appearance at a rally for Harris, although her husband has been appearing regularly on the trail on Harris’ behalf.

“I gotta ask myself: why on earth is this race even close? I lay awake at night wondering: what in the world is going on?,” the former First Lady said at the rally, according to a report in The Hill.

“I hope you’ll forgive me if I’m a little frustrated that some of us are choosing to ignore Donald Trump’s gross incompetence while asking Kamala to dazzle us at every turn,” she added.

“I hope that you’ll forgive me if I’m a little angry that we are indifferent to his erratic behavior, his obvious mental decline, his history as a convicted felon, a known slum lord, a predator found liable for sexual abuse, all of this while we pick apart Kamala’s answers from interviews that he doesn’t even have the courage to do, y’all.”

Conspiracy theories in recent years, pushed by the likes of Ted Cruz, had stated that the Democrats would “switch out Joe Biden at the last minute” and replace him on the ticket with Michelle Obama. Biden did indeed drop out of the race this summer, but the party quickly pivoted to Harris. Michelle Obama has been adament, for the entirety of her time in public life, that she is not interested in running for office herself.

“I am praying that we consider the decades of sacrifice and struggle by all of our ancestors, the folks who marched and sacrificed and shed their blood for us. We have to ask ourselves: is a vote for Trump or no vote at all the way we honor their lives? And if that’s the case, well, that surely doesn’t sound like freedom to me,” the former first lady added in her Michigan speech.
