Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is leaving Congress in January, but before she leaves, she’s reportedly planning one more shocking move, after a career full of them.

Per MS NOW, Greene is weighing a move to try to oust House Speaker Mike Johnson.

“In recent days, the controversial Georgia Republican has been working behind the scenes to gauge whether there’s support for a motion to vacate the chair, three sources familiar with her efforts who spoke on the condition of anonymity told MS NOW.”

Nine Republicans would be needed to remove Johnson via a motion to vacate.

“Marjorie is approaching members to get to nine who will oust the speaker,” a source told the network. “And if we don’t get to work on codifying Trump’s agenda, anything can happen.”

The story did make clear that the move is a long shot, and that it’s unclear if Greene will actually go through with it.
And while Greene has certainly become more friendly to the mainstream media since her break with Trump earlier this year, Greene told MS NOW that “I’m not interested in participating in your story.”
Johnson’s predecessor as speaker, Kevin McCarthy, was toppled in a motion to vacate from his own side in 2023, although Greene was closely allied with McCarthy and did not participate in that effort. The rules were also different at that time, as only one vote was needed for a motion to vacate, as opposed to nine.
Johnson also retains the support of the president.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) was asked by MS NOW how Democrats would react to a bid to remove the speaker.
“We’d have to have that discussion in terms of what House Democrats might do to the extent there is such a vote,” Jeffries said. “But clearly, nothing that the Speaker of the House has done over the last several months has endeared himself to Democrats in the Congress.”
