Just a couple of months ago, Donald Trump looked invincible. He won the election, winning every swing state and the popular vote, and came into power with a Republican-controlled Congress. His legal cases disappeared, and he came into office with the Supreme Court ruling in favor of presidential immunity. Upon taking office, Trump, even by his usual standards, has taken on an ever-growing air of hubris.
But now, just over a month into his second presidency, Trump is highly unpopular.
The latest Gallup Poll shows that Trump’s approval rating is 45 percent. Per Gallup, Trump’s approval rating in his first February as president is “15 points below the historical average for all other elected presidents in mid-February since 1953,” while of all presidents since 1953 measured in the poll, the only president in that time with a lower rating is Trump himself, in his first term in 2017.
While Trump remains overwhelmingly approved by Republicans, it’s a different story with the overall population.

“Trump’s ratings on several issues that his administration has targeted in the first weeks of his presidency are similar to his overall rating, including on immigration (46%), foreign affairs (44%), foreign trade (42%), and the economy (42%),” Gallup’s writeup of the poll says. “Meanwhile, slightly fewer Americans, 40% each, approve of the president’s handling of the situations in Ukraine and in the Middle East between the Israelis and Palestinians, as fewer offer opinions of his performance on these two issues.”
Another Washington Post/Ipsos poll also found Trump’s approval rating low. That poll found that 45 percent of Americans approve of Trump’s job performance.
” The public has a mixed to negative reaction to the Trump administration’s executive orders and policies. Most feel Trump has gone beyond his authority as president, with few feeling Republicans in Congress will try to stop him,” the Ipsos post writeup said.
Another question asked in the Post/Ipsos poll likely wouldn’t have been asked at any other time in history.
“A decisive majority (84%) think that if a federal court rules that something the Trump administration did is illegal, the administration should follow the court ruling,” the poll said. “Only one in ten (11%) believes the administration should ignore the court ruling.”
The question might be whether Trump, who will never face the voters again, will care about his sinking approval rating.
